The Sierra Leone High Commission in London was today represented by staff, including the Head of Chancery and Minister Plenipotentiary, Mrs. Juliana Sia Hawa Fallah, at the Fourah Bay College Alumni Association UK (FBC AA UK) Annual Thanksgiving Service held at All Saints Church, New Cross, South-East London, under the theme \u201c*The Power of Selfless Living*.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event brought together alumni, friends, and supporters of Fourah Bay College (FBC) to give thanks for God\u2019s blessings and reaffirm their commitment to supporting Sierra Leone\u2019s premier institution of higher learning as it prepares to celebrate its bicentenary in February 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mrs. Fallah, who served as one of the event\u2019s Grand Chief Patrons, delivered the New Testament reading from Romans 4:13\u201325, highlighting prophet Abraham\u2019s faith in God\u2019s promises and the rewards of trust and sacrifice. The Old Testament reading from Genesis 12:1\u20139, delivered by Mr. Nat Stevens, recounted God\u2019s call to Abraham to leave his homeland and journey into the unknown. Together, the readings emphasised faith, obedience, sacrifice, and service to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her sermon, Deacon Jacqueline Esama-John reflected on the FBC motto, \u201cNon Sibi Sed Aliis\u201d (Not for Self but for Others), calling on alumni to embrace humility, generosity, and selfless service. Drawing on the Parable of the Good Samaritan, she challenged the congregation to demonstrate compassion through practical support for others, particularly students and institutions in need. She reminded worshippers that Fourah Bay College was founded not only for Sierra Leoneans but for the advancement of education throughout West Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Founded in 1827, Fourah Bay College is the oldest Western-style university institution in Sub-Saharan Africa. For generations, it attracted students from across the region and produced distinguished leaders, scholars, clergy, and public servants. Its reputation for academic excellence earned it the title \u201cThe Athens of West Africa,\u201d reflecting its historic role as a leading centre of learning and intellectual thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The service included prayers for His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, the Government and people of Sierra Leone. Prayers were also offered for continued peace, unity, and development in the country, as well as for communities affected by conflict and hardship around the world. A solemn memorial tribute honoured alumni and members of the Fourah Bay College family who had passed away in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delivering the Vote of Thanks, Organising Secretary Mr. Suluku Kalawa expressed appreciation to the clergy, patrons, alumni, guests, and supporters whose contributions made the event a success. He commended the dedication of members and volunteers, describing their commitment as the lifeblood of the Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the service, guests attended a reception during which the Fourah Bay College Alumni Association UK officially launched activities leading up to the College\u2019s Bicentenary Celebrations in 2027. The ceremonial launch was conducted by former Principal of Fourah Bay College and renowned geologist, Professor V. E. H. Strasser-King, in recognition of his long and distinguished service to the institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today\u2019s event provided an opportunity for alumni and supporters to reflect on the College\u2019s legacy and discuss initiatives aimed at supporting its future development, including scholarship facilities, library improvements, and other projects designed to strengthen the institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The participation of Mrs. Juliana Sia Hawa Fallah and staff of the Sierra Leone High Commission underscored the Mission\u2019s continued support for educational endeavours and the important role of diaspora organisations in national development. The thanksgiving service and reception served as a fitting celebration of Fourah Bay College\u2019s enduring contribution to Sierra Leone, West Africa, and the wider African diaspora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
